Professor of JAZZ STUDIES and Director of the Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra, Dewberry School of Music, CVPAProfessor Jim Carroll has a versatile background ranging from tours with Michael Jackson to Woody Herman and The Thundering Herd. Jim received both his Undergraduate and Graduate training from Indiana University under the tutelage of David Baker and Eugene Rousseau.
Adjunct Applied Faculty, OBOE, Dewberry School of Music, CVPAOriginally from Newark, Delaware, Emily Foster joined The United States Air Force Band in Washington, DC in 2013 and was appointed as Adjunct Oboe Faculty at George Mason University in 2019.
Adjunct Faculty, SAXOPHONE, Dewberry School of Music, CVPAEd Fraedrich, saxophone, joined the faculty of GMU in the fall of 2011 after having established a successful private studio in the area. He has performed solos with many ensembles, including the National Symphony Orchestra and the Fairfax Wind Symphony.
Adjunct Faculty, BASSOON, Dewberry School of Music, CVPAChristopher Jewell is the Assistant Principal Bassoonist of the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra. An active performer in the Washington, DC area, Mr. Jewell also regularly performs with the Eclipse Chamber Orchestra, Post Classical Ensemble, Wolf Trap Opera Company, and the Chesapeake Chamber Orchestra.
Assistant Professor of Jazz Studies, SAXOPHONE, Jazz Workshop, Jazz Studies, Jazz History, Dewberry School of Music, CVPASaxophonist, composer, and educator John Kocur is Assistant Professor of Jazz Studies at George Mason University. He previously taught at Northern Virginia Community College where he directed the NOVA Nighthawks Jazz Ensemble. He serves as a saxophonist with the 257th Army Band of the D.C. National Guard, “the Band of the Nation’s Capital.”
Director of WOODWINDS, CLARINET, Dewberry School of Music, CVPAKathleen Mulcahy was appointed as Director of Woodwinds and Assistant Professor of Clarinet at George Mason University in August 2018, after serving as Adjunct Professor of Clarinet since in 2012. She performs frequently with the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra and the National Symphony.
Adjunct Faculty, FLUTE, Dewberry School of Music, CVPAJulianna Nickel is a very active recitalist, teacher, and freelancer in the Washington, DC and Virginia areas. She is Adjunct Professor of Flute at George Mason University and a two-time recipient of Mason’s Distinguished Teacher of the Year (2019, 2017).
Adjunct Faculty, JAZZ SAXOPHONE, Dewberry School of Music, CVPAOriginally from Miami, Florida Xavier has performed in 13 countries and 48 states with a wide range of artists in the jazz and Latin music worlds. Xavier was the only U.S representative selected to perform in the final elimination round at an international saxophone competition where he placed 2nd place out of hundreds of applicants from more than 20 countries.
