Ensemble Director: Prof. June Huang

The string faculty at George Mason University strives to build an inclusive community and a sense of belonging. By pursuing musical excellence through strong citizenship, we celebrate the diverse backgrounds and future goals of our students. We are committed to supporting students as they explore their curiosity and determine their next best step. Through the simple act of making music together, we create memorable shared experiences that embolden us to make authentic connections with others.

String Chamber Ensemble at The Kennedy Center

George Mason students, faculty, and alumni performed on May 8, 2022 at The Kennedy Center for the AANHPI (Asian-American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific-Islander Concert, organized/directed by Dr. Mira Yang (George Mason voice faculty member). The Mason String Sextet performed the Washington D.C. premiere of Ching-Chu Hu’s Spheres of Influence for string sextet with Professor June Huang and students from the Mason strings studio. The string sextet members included Annette Lee, Violin; Joanna Zakzewski, Viola; Jaclyn Kitcoff, Viola; Eddie Adams, Cello; and Brian Bera, Double Bass.

Giving Back to the Community

The string players at George Mason can participate in many different activities that occur both on and off campus each semester. Each project gives back to the community and provides a rich learning opportunity for the students.

While the George Mason string players can be seen playing in large venues like the Kennedy Center, the Washington National Cathedral, and the Hylton Performing Arts Center, they also provide regular concerts to local retirement communities and memory care facilities.

Music In the Lobby

Music in the Lobby is a popular concert series that takes place in the lobby of the Fenwick Library. The environment simulates a casual coffeehouse concert. Performers are challenged to learn the repertoire quickly and to share brief remarks with the audience. These noonday concerts, at which refreshments are provided, are a welcome break to students and staff.

Students Teach

Many of the pedagogy and music education students teach private lessons at local music stores. Our partnership with the Mason Community Arts Academy allows them to gain valuable experience by assisting at summer camps such as the MCAA High School Institute and the MCAA String Camp.

Faculty-Led Research

Through grants from the Office of Student Scholarship, Creative Activities, and Research (OSCAR), students are invited to participate in faculty-led research. On one such project, students joined Prof. June Huang in a presentation on developing communication skills through chamber music at the American String Teachers Association (ASTA) National Conference in Atlanta, Georgia.
