Biography
Dr. Kathleen Smith began teaching at George Mason in 2011. She received her masters and doctoral degrees in Music Theory from Florida State University where she was honored with a university-wide Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award. She has served on the faculty of George Washington University, Northern Virginia Community College at Alexandria, and Shenandoah Conservatory.
Dr. Smith’s research interests include minimalist and postminimalist composition and the analysis of popular music. She has presented her work at the national meeting of the Society for Music Theory, the College Music Society Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference, the Second International Conference on Minimalist Music, the John Cage Conference, The 1980s: Popular Music and Culture Interdisciplinary Graduate Student Conference, and the Look and Listen Conference.
In addition to teaching, Dr. Smith plays trumpet and handbells at her local church where she also co-directs a children's choir. She lives in Centreville with her husband and two daughters.
