Dr. Jennifer Lapple is Adjunct Professor of Flute at George Mason University, where she is also the director of the George Mason University Flute Choir and former director of the George Mason University Symphonic Band. She lectures on “The Art of Teaching Music,” an undergraduate class focusing on pedagogy, music wellness and performance enhancement for musicians. Her dissertation, “A Comparative Case Study on the Effectiveness of a Multisensory Instructional Method for Learning Musical Expression” is one aspect of this course as well as the topic of several lectures and workshops in Northern, VA, including the Flute Society of Washington, Mid-Atlantic Flute Fair and Richmond Flute Fest at Virginia Commonwealth University. Additionally, Dr. Lapple lectures on music wellness practices for the student community in a series of workshops throughout the year.
In addition to her work at GMU, Dr. Lapple maintains a private flute studio in Northern Virginia whose students perform with area youth orchestras and compete in local and national competitions with continued studies at the collegiate level in both conservatories and universities.
Jennifer maintains an active performing career in addition to her teaching responsibilities, which includes past performances with the Ecole de Musique de Differdange Flute Choir, Differdange, Luxembourg; Rome Festival Orchestra, Rome, Italy; Echternach Festival Orchestra, Echternach, Luxembourg; American Pops Orchestra at George Mason University, Fairfax, VA; The Pan American Symphony, Washington DC; and FUSE New Music Ensemble, Washington, DC. She is also active as substitute principal flute for the Savannah Philharmonic Orchestra, Savannah, GA.
Dr. Lapple is director and conductor of Flutopia Wind Ensemble, an elite ensemble featuring high school musicians from around Northern Virginia. The ensemble performs regularly at local high schools and college and national venues including George Mason University Center for the Arts, Fairfax, VA (2012); Strathmore Music Center, Rockville, MD (2013); and Carnegie Hall, New York City, NY (2011, 2014).
Jennifer is also the director of the Judith Lapple Summer Woodwind Camp, a two-week intensive summer camp featuring large ensembles, instrumental choirs, individual instruction, master classes and workshops on musicianship, professionalism, taking better auditions, practice techniques and strategies, instrument repair, pedagogy and more.
