- Music Fundamentals
Colton Morris is a percussionist, pianist, and educator from Durham, NC and has enjoyed experiences both in North Carolina and all across Tennessee. He recently served as Associate Principal Percussion for the Johnson City Symphony Orchestra, as well as performed with the Oak Ridge Civic Orchestra and Symphony of the Mountains (Kingsport, TN). Colton also enjoys working with various chamber musicians inside and outside percussion. During his time in Knoxville, TN, he has collaborated for several world premieres with the UT Contemporary Music Ensemble and the area’s leading percussion ensemble, Ensemble Knox. In theater work, he was also privileged to perform as a percussionist in a recent Knoxville production of West Side Story. Additionally, he has enjoyed time as a Jazz pianist, having toured in Tennessee with a student-formed combo, Just Friends.
As an educator, Colton has presented clinics and worked with public schools across the state of Tennessee. As well, he has recently worked near his hometown area, both as a counselor this Summer at the UNCG Summer Music Camp in Greensboro, NC, and his most recent appointment with the band program at John W. Ligon GT Magnet Middle School in Raleigh, NC. At a university level, he taught privately and coached ensembles within the University of Tennessee Percussion Department, while also serving as a teaching assistant and tutor for the school’s departments of music theory and musicology.
Last Summer at the Sewanee Summer Music Festival, Colton studied with Professor John Kilkenny, who he now continues to do so with as he pursues his Doctor of Musical Arts at George Mason University. He received his Master of Music degree in Performance at the University of Tennessee and holds a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Tennessee Tech University.
