High School Jazz Artist Competition

The annual Jazz Artist Competition is open to all high school Jazz students. Three entrants (one vocal, one instrumental and one rhythm) will be selected to perform on “International Jazz Day” Sunday April 30th 2pm, with George Mason University’s Jazz Ensemble at George Mason University’s Center for the Arts. In addition to the opportunity to perform with the Mason Jazz Ensemble, entrants will each receive a five hundred dollar ($500) scholarship.

Application Requirements

  • $25 entry fee
  • All entrants must submit their application and recordings by 11:59 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, Monday, April 4, 2017.

Repertoire

  • Miles Davis, “Four” from Miles Davis: Volume 7 (Aebersold)
  • Thelonious Monk, “Round Midnight” from Thelonious Monk: Volume 56 (Aebersold)
  • Bb Blues, Any tune
  • Audition repertoire should be played with jazz piano, guitar, or full rhythm section accompaniment, OR with a play-along recording (ie. Aebersold, Band-in-a-Box, iRealb).
