The Unitarian Universalist Church in Reston (UUCR) is seeking a Pianist/Accompanist to play music during services and accompany choir rehearsals for this dynamic, growing congregation.

Job Summary:  The Pianist/Accompanist provides piano music and accompanies the choir for Sunday worship services and accompanies weekly choir rehearsals. The Pianist/Accompanist assists the music director in assuring musical excellence during worship services, plays solos, accompanies the choir and soloists, and accompanies hymns.

Job Hours:  Thursdays 7:30 p.m. – 9 p.m. and Sundays 9 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

Supervised by: The Music Director

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Under the leadership of the Music Director, provides piano music and piano accompaniment for UUCR Sunday worship services, and occasional special services such as Christmas Eve.  Responsibilities include playing solos, accompanying the choir and soloists, accompanying hymns, and providing other piano music as needed.
  2. Accompanies weekly choir rehearsals.
  3. Selects music from their own repertoire (or learns new pieces) which will enhance the theme of the weekly Sunday service for elements of worship which require solo piano music.
  4. Supports the Music Director during rehearsals and services in a collegial and professional manner.  Works with volunteer church musicians in a spirit of friendly collaboration, with an encouraging and warm approach.

Qualifications:  Two to five years’ experience as a Choral/Vocal Accompanist; Experience accompanying in a variety of styles including classical, gospel, rock, pop and jazz;  Ability to improvise an accompaniment from chords or a lead sheet; Ability to work well as part of a team;  Dependability and availability essential!

Pay:  $75 per rehearsal and $150 per service.
