Faculty Biographies

Camphouse Mark Camphouse

Composer-conductor Mark Camphouse is Professor of Music at George Mason University where he conducts the Wind Symphony and teaches courses in conducting and composition. A graduate of Northwestern University, his compositions have received widespread critical acclaim and are performed frequently in the U.S. and abroad. He has served as a guest conductor in 40 states, Canada, and Europe. Camphouse is an elected member of the American Bandmasters Association and serves as conductor of the National Band Association’s Young Composer Mentor Project. He is also the editor of the Composers on Composing for Band series of books, published by GIA Music Publications. Mark is a recipient of the prestigious Outstanding Faculty Award by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia – the Commonwealth’s highest honor for demonstrated excellence in teaching, research, and public service.

Jessica Clements

Artist Jessica Clements is an adjunct faculty member for the School of Art at Mason. She is also a GMU alum, earning her MFA from the university. Jessica is becoming well-known for her works surrounding motherhood, childbirth and feminism.

Frook Beth Frook

Beth taught the first Little Hands Kindermusik classes in 1993. In 2000, Beth was awarded "Maestro" status by Kindermusik International, signifying her as director of one of the top studio programs in the country. Beth has a Bachelors Degree from George Washington University and extensive vocal and piano training. She is active on the National and local Boards of The Kindermusik Educators Association. Beth teaches all age groups in the curriculum and loves making music with children and parents!

Frook Jean Kellogg

Jean joined George Mason University as Executive Director of the Hylton Performing Arts in January of 2008. Ms. Kellogg is responsible for the overall management, planning, and programming for the Center. She is also Director of Community Arts Partnerships, working closely with the community in Prince William, Manassas, Fairfax, and the region building relationships with arts, business, civic, and service organizations in order to maximize community engagement at Mason. Prior to coming to Mason, Ms. Kellogg was the Director of Education at Lyric Opera of Chicago for nine years, where she significantly increased the scope and volume of outreach programs for students and adults. More than 80,000 students and adults participated in Lyric Opera’s education programs annually. Ms. Kellogg created numerous collaborations with other major Chicago institutions such as the Art Institute, University of Chicago, Loyola University, Chicago Humanities Festival, and Newberry Library. In addition, Ms. Kellogg supervised a corps of 125 education docents who gave backstage tours to students, lectures in the community, and worked in the classroom with elementary school students. From 1990-1998, Jean was on the administrative staff of the Levine School of Music in Washington, D.C. She became Dean of the school in 1993, and was the acting Executive Director in 1998. During her time as Dean, three branches of the school were added in Maryland, Virginia, and Southeast D.C. which continue to be active today. Ms. Kellogg has also been on the administrative staffs of Greater Miami Opera (now Florida Grand Opera), Chautauqua Institution, and Westminster Choir College. She has a Bachelor’s degree in piano performance from Florida State University, and a Master’s degree in piano accompaniment and chamber music from Westminster Choir College. Jean has been a panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts, Opera America conferences, and the Children’s International Film Festival; adjudicator for the Metropolitan Opera auditions as well as numerous university and community music school competitions; and received the faculty citation from Florida State University for outstanding teaching and leadership in 1999. Active as a coach-accompanist for 30 years, she is also a professional singer of oratorio, opera, and cabaret since 1996.

Kelly Jeanne Kelly

Currently, Ms. Kelly is the founder and executive director of the nonprofit organization, Encore Creativity for Older Adults, which is dedicated to providing an excellent, accessible, and sustainable artistic environment for older adults over 55 years of age, either beginning, intermediate or advanced levels, who seek arts education and performance opportunities under a professional artist. Encore Chorales are now located at Langston- Brown Senior Center in Arlington, VA., Goodwin House Alexandria, Goodwin House Baileys Crossroads, Myerberg Senior Center in Baltimore, Smithsonian Institution in D.C. and the Workhouse Center for the Arts in Lorton, VA and Potomac Arts Academy at George Mason University. Dance programs for older adults are being introduced fall 2008 at Arlington Center for Dance and Workhouse Center for Arts in Lorton. Encore is pleased to be presenting Encore Band programs at Potomac Arts Academy at George Mason University and Lorton. Encore also offers Encore Chorale “Sleep Away” Camps at St. Mary’s College of Maryland and the famed Chautauqua Institution in New York.

Kilkenny John Kilkenny

John appears regularly with such prestigious ensembles as the National Symphony, Washington National Opera, Washington Ballet, and National Philharmonic. He has worked with some of the eminent conductors of our time, including James Levine, Leonard Slatkin, Sir Colin Davis, David Zinman, Gerald Schwarz and Marin Alsop. He currently serves on the music department faculty of George Mason University. Other appearances include the 2003, 2005, 2007 Bands of America National Percussion Festival, 2003 Virginia music Educators Conference, 2002 Virginia DC day of Percussion and the John Philip Sousa Foundation National High School Honor Band. He was also Coordinator and Co Chair of the University of Maryland Summer Percussion Workshop. John received his bachelors degree from Juilliard School and his masters from Temple University.

Lechter Mary Lechter

Mary has been working professionally as an actor in the Metropolitan Washington area, Los Angeles, and New York since 1985.A graduate of University of Maryland, College Park with a Bachelor’s Degree in Theater and Speech Communications, she has worked at Washington area theaters including Theater of the First Amendment, Arena Stage, Studio Theatre, and Source Theatre.  Television, radio and film credits include ABC’s All My Children, Barry Levinson’s Avalon, Diesel Films’ Dracula’s Mother, the recent MGM/Lionsgate thriller Hit and Run, and several spots for NPR’s Morning Edition.
Mary is Founder, President and Director of A Class Act – Acting for Young People & Adults, Inc. (AFYP). Founded in 1997, the program provides professional-level acting training for students of all ages. She is also Artistic Director for AFYP’s new sister organization, AFYP Stages. The new company is dedicated to producing plays for young audiences and their families. She is also a proud member of George Mason University’s faculty, in the Department of Theater and School of Music.
Applying acting skills in the business world, Mary’s corporate training clients include D.R. Horton Realtors, The D.C. Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors, The D.C. Life Underwriters Foundation, and the Law Firm of Weiner, Rohrstaff & Spivey.Mary is a member of The Screen Actors Guild, The American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, Actor’s Equity Association, The American Association for Theater Educators, Americans for the Arts, and the Educational Theatre Association.

Martino Katie Martino

Katie Martino began playing violin at age seven. Since then she has had the opportunity to play with her four sisters as a quintet, as well as in numerous orchestras including the George Mason University Symphony Orchestra, Rappahannock POPS Orchestra, and the MasterWorks Philharmonic Orchestra. During the summer of 2004 Katie began her own private studio, and from 2006-2008 she conducted the Grace Center for the Arts string ensembles. Katie is currently finishing her degree in Music Education at George Mason University after which she plans on continuing to teach young musicians.

Mueller Johanna Mueller

Johanna is a native of Denver, Colorado where she attended The Metropolitan State College of Denver and a received a BFA in printmaking. Moving east in 2005, she pursued an MFA at George Mason University. Developing her own personal mythology, she draws from her own narrative, cultural and historical references, pattern and design, and the history of printmaking. Her work can be found in private collections nationwide, and she has exhibited in various locals in the United States and worldwide. Johanna has taught youth at Arlington Arts Center and Capitol Hill Artist Workshops, and she has student taught college students at George Mason University.

oppido Vincent Oppido

A native of Long Island, New York, Vincent Oppido is a graduate student in music at George Mason University, where is principal private teachers include Anthony Maiello (conducting), Mark Camphouse (composition), and Anna Balakerskaia (piano). Vincent has had several works published by major companies and is featured as one of 18 outstanding young, emerging American composers in Volume 4 of the Composers on Composing for Band book series by GIA Publications in Chicago.

Frook Adam Phillips

Adam Phillips is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Music Education degree at George Mason University. An admired pupil of Larry Snitzler (classical guitar) and Glenn Dewey (jazz electric bass), Mr. Phillips comes highly recommended as a competent and well-rounded guitarist and musician. He has a wide range of experience in both large jazz ensembles and small combos and orchestras, and he has played in bands of all musical styles including funk, rock, blues, pop and acoustic. Adam has also played percussion for wind ensembles at both the high school and college level.

Frook Claire Walker

Claire Walker began studying percussion when she was in fifth grade with Brenda Weckerly, a former member of the United States Marine Band. She is a recent graduate of the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music with a Bachelor's degree in percussion performance. Claire has performed with various bands and orchestras including the Camerata Orchestra of Bloomington as principal timpanist, the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic and the Owensboro Symphony in Kentucky. She is very active in the percussive world and has been a member of PAS (the Percussive Arts Society) for 7 years. She has also attended PASIC (the Percussive Arts Society International Convention) for the past few years. Claire is currently the pit instructor for the West Potomac High School Marching Band and a music education student at George Mason University where she is pursuing her teaching certificate.
