Performance Opportunities: Vocal/Choral

University Chamber Singers

The University Chamber Singers, the most select choral ensemble at George Mason University, is dedicated to the performance of advanced music for chamber voices ranging from Renaissance madrigals to contemporary commissioned works. As ambassadors for the university, the group makes annual tours throughout the Eastern seaboard presenting concert repertoire. Past performances have included appearances at the Virginia Music Educators Conference and concert tours to New York City, Georgia, and Southern Virginia.

University Symphonic Chorus

The University Symphonic Chorus is a large oratorio choir numbering 100 singers drawn from the campus and the community. This group collaborates frequently with university and professional orchestras and soloists in performances of the great masterworks of choral literature including Handel's Messiah, Orff's Carmina Burana, Brahms' German Requiem, and opera choruses.

University Chorale

The University Chorale is a 100-voice ensemble that presents music for concert choir, as well as music for women's and men's choruses. This ensemble performs frequently on and off campus, as well as in regional choral festivals. Repertoire includes traditional and new works for women's and men's choruses.

University Vocal Jazz Ensemble, SoundCheque

The University Vocal Jazz Ensemble, SoundCheque, performs the best in vocal jazz repertoire ranging from jazz standards to new works written especially for the group. Numbering between 6 and 10 voices, this group performs frequently for events on campus and in the community, as well as in tours and featured concerts each year.

University Gospel Choir

The Echoes of Joy Gospel Choir is committed to performing the finest in standard and contemporary gospel music. Performances include annual festivals both on campus and at other universities, Martin Luther King Day celebrations, and other civic functions.

University Opera Scenes/Workshop

Designed to provide performance opportunities and on-stage musical and dramatic experience for vocal performance majors, the Opera Scenes Workshop Ensemble performs scenes from various operas in several performances on and off campus each semester. Previous performances have included Mozart's Cosi fan Tutte, Menotti's Amahl and the Night Visitors, Cavalli's L'Ormindo and scenes from Purcell's Dido and Aeneus, Stravinsky's Rake's Progress, Gershwin's Porgy and Bess, Puccini's Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi, and others.

University Musical Theater

Each summer, the university presents a Musical Theater Workshop to train singers in singing, dancing, and acting for the musical stage. Past performances have included retrospectives of the music of Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim, Cole Porter, and Gilbert and Sullivan. In addition, each spring the University Players present a student musical for which members of the choral ensembles are chosen, with past productions including Pajama Game, Working, and Sondheim's Sweeney Todd.
