Academic Awards

Dennis M. Layendecker: Heritage Chair in Music; Director, School of Music

            Achievement Award, Undergraduate Studies: These awards recognize outstanding graduates in the Bachelor of Arts in Music degree.

            Amy Tanna (BA Flute, Biology and Linguistics minors) has performed with the University Symphonic Band, Wind Symphony, and Symphony Orchestra, for which she has also served as Music Librarian.  While at George Mason University, she studied flute with Professors Judith Lapple and Juliana Nickel.

            Andrea Lively (BA Music; BS Economics) While a student at the George Mason University School of Music, Andrea participated in many ensembles, including the Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Ensembles, as well as the String Chamber Orchestra.  She also studied applied violin with Professor Peter Haase.

            Achievement Award, Professional Preparation: These awards recognize outstanding graduates in the Bachelor of Music degree.

            Emma McDermott (Music Performance) has pursued double concentrations in piano and voice. While at George Mason University, she has studied piano with Dr. Anna Balakerskaia and voice with Professor Debra Wenner.  She has also performed with the University Singers, the SATB Chorale, and with various chamber ensembles. 

            Natalie Naudus (BM Performance) is a vocal performance major.  Her primary vocal professor has been Professor Debra Wenner.  While at George Mason, Natalie performed with University Singers, SATB Chorale, and Women’s Chorale, as well as with the University Opera. 

            Anne Marie White (BM Performance) has studied voice with Professor Debra Wenner while at George Mason University.  She has performed with SATB Chorale, Women’s Chorale, and the University Opera.    

            Michelle Fleischman (BM Music Education) During her time as a Music Student at George Mason University, Michelle was an active participant with the Symphony Orchestra, Various Chamber Ensembles, Chamber Orchestra, Pep Band, and String Chamber Orchestra. She also studied applied with Professor Peter Haase.

             Adam Phillips (BM Music Education; Jazz Studies and Music & Technology Minors) As a student at the George Mason University School of Music, Adam student applied guitar with studied with Professor Larry Snitzler.  He also performed with the Symphonic Band, Jazz Combos, Jazz Workshop, and University Chorale.

            Achievement Award, Graduate Study of Music: These awards recognize outstanding accomplishments in advanced professional study in the Master of Music degree.

            Jennifer Frazier (MM Education) is graduating from George Mason University having studied Choral Conducting with Dr. Lisa Billingham.  Jennifer is currently teaching for the Fairfax County Public School system.

            Frank Gonzalez (MM Performance) has studied with Professor John Kilkenny, and performed with the University Percussion Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra during his time at George Mason University.  Frank holds a Bachelor of Music from the University of Texas at El Paso.    

            Emily Lewis (MM Music Performance) studied violin performance with Professor Edwin Johonnott and Dr. Laura Kobayashi, and has been an active member of the University Symphony Orchestra.  Emily also holds a Bachelor of Music Degree in Music Education with a concentration in violin from Temple University.

           Michael Polo (MM Composition) graduates from George Mason having premiered several of his compositions with the University Wind Symphony.  He has studied composition with Professor Mark Camphouse and Dr. Jesse Guessford.  Michael holds an undergraduate degree from Rowan University.

            Achievement Award, Departmental Service: These awards recognize outstanding contributions to the excellence of the music program.

            David Roth (BA Guitar, Jazz Studies Minor) has performed with the Jazz Ensemble, Pep Band, and Instrumental Jazz Workshop.  While at George Mason University he studied Jazz guitar with Professor Rick Whitehead.  David is also a member of Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Service Fraternity. 

            Patrick O'Connell (BA Trumpet) graduates from George Mason having studied with Professor Stanley Curtis.  While at George Mason he has performed with the University Symphony Orchestra, Wind Symphony, both Instrumental and Vocal Jazz Ensembles, and University Singers.  Patrick is also a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.
